What is CNC Machine? Basic Knowledge Must-Read for Beginners

What is cnc machine?A CNC machine is a machine that runs a CNC operating system. The full name of the CNC system is Computer Numerical Control System, so the full form of a CNC machine is Computer Numerical Control Machine.

How Does It Work?

The workflow of a CNC machine consists of four steps.

1. Drawing Design: Engineers use professional computer software (CAD) to draw the 3D model of the part, determining dimensions and geometric features.

2. Programming Toolpath Code: Through CAM software, selecting tools, setting cutting speed, feed rate, and processing path according to the part’s material and shape, generating G-code (controlling position and movement) and M-code (controlling auxiliary functions, such as coolant opening and closing, spindle rotation direction, etc.) that the machine tool can understand.

3. Machine Preparation: The CNC operator imports the generated G-code and M-code into the CNC control system (different control systems have different import methods), and puts the prepared material into the processing workbench to fix it.

4. Automated Processing: The CNC system converts digital instructions into electrical signals and sends them to drivers and servo motors. The motor drives the spindle to rotate at high speed and controls the XYZ axes of the workbench to move. During this process, the CNC machine will automatically complete all processing procedures.

Advantages of CNC Machines

The two biggest advantages of a CNC machine compared to traditional machine tools are precision control and efficiency increase.

1、Higher Control Precision The precision of a CNC control system is at the micron level, which can easily be used for high-precision machining such as in aerospace and internal combustion engines, whereas manual machine tools simply cannot compare with this precision. Manual machines can basically only be controlled at the millimeter level.

2、Faster Machining Efficiency Unified and programmed machining trajectory data can support the CNC control system to complete all machining at one time, whereas manual machine tools have no way to complete all machining at once. In addition, most CNC machines are equipped with an automatic tool changer system, which shortens the machining steps and improves efficiency.

Types of CNC Machine

According to operation, simple division into the following four common types:

1、CNC Milling Machine: The core machining feature is “the workpiece remains fixed (or moves/tilts driven by the workbench), and the tool rotates at high speed to cut.”

2、CNC Turning Machine: Also called a CNC lathe, which adds a CNC control system to a traditional lathe.

3、CNC Grinding Machine: The core feature is “not using metal cutting tools, but using high-quality micron-level grinding wheels to perform micro-polishing and grinding.”

4、CNC Cutting Machine: The core feature is “focusing mainly on cutting and severing, usually not involving deep digging or complex 3D cavity machining.”

What is CNC Machine Used for

CNC machines are an indispensable machine type in modernization. Currently, most of the items you can see are manufactured directly or indirectly through CNC machines. Here are some cases:

1、Machining complex parts of difficult-to-machine materials such as titanium alloys and high-temperature alloys, such as engine blades, wing structural components, and landing gear

2、Machining mass-produced, high-efficiency, and highly consistent parts, such as engine blocks/cylinder heads, crankshafts, and camshafts

3、Machining miniaturized, high-precision components with extremely high surface finish requirements, such as artificial hip joints and bone screws

4、Machining structural parts with high appearance surface finish and tight tolerances, such as mobile phone/computer aluminum alloy middle frames and casings, and chip heat sinks

5、Machining complex deep cavities and 3D curved surfaces, such as automotive stamping dies, plastic injection molds, and die-casting molds

6、Machining large-volume and ultra-heavy structural parts, such as wind turbine main shafts, hydro-turbine rotors, etc.
