If you do not want a toy that is simply installed with a CNC system, but a real CNC machine that can perform industrial-grade metal machining, then after reading this article, you will know the mainstream CNC machine types and how to select the suitable machine for yourself.

Vertical machining center
The vertical machining center adopts a vertical structure, and its spindle is perpendicular to the ground, making it easier to complete heavy cutting under the action of gravity. Its functionality is very comprehensive; paired with guideways, it can perform fast roughing; paired with box ways, it can perform heavy cutting; it can make both parts and molds. The technology is mature, maintenance is convenient, and accessories are cheap.
Features:
- strong comprehensiveness
- can do any kind of work
- rich configurations
- and relatively low price

Horizontal machining center
The spindle of the horizontal machining center is parallel to the ground. Although its cutting force is not as good as that of a vertical machine in the same specifications, the horizontal machine has a rotary worktable, possessing incomparable flexibility and comprehensive performance advantages in multi-sided machining that a vertical machine cannot match. Furthermore, horizontal machining centers are inherently born for the machining of medium-to-large complex workpieces.
Features:
- Multi-sided machining
- deep cavity machining
- convenient chip evacuation

Tapping&Drilling Center
The drilling and tapping center is a compact design based on the traditional vertical structure, so it is also called a compact machining center. For the sake of efficiency, drilling and tapping machines are specially equipped with higher-efficiency guideways and spindles. For small aluminum parts machining, the efficiency is over 80% higher than that of vertical machining centers. However, for steel parts machining, it is significantly inferior to vertical machining centers, or it can even be said that it cannot machine steel parts.
Features:
- small footprint
- high efficiency
- very suitable for single aluminum part machining

5-Axis Machining Center
The 5-axis machining center adopts a cradle-type structure or a swivel head-type structure. Coordinated with a specialized control system, it can achieve 5-axis simultaneous machining and features the tool center point management function, allowing for complex curved surface machining, and the entire machining process can be completed with a one-time clamping. This significantly improves machining efficiency. If 5-axis simultaneous machining is not required, a 5-axis rotary table can simply be added to a conventional 3-axis machine. (A 3+2 5-axis can also be obtained in this way.)
Features:
- high-precision control
- high efficiency in complex machining
- more expensive price

Gantry Machining Center(Double Columns)
The gantry machining center is also called a large machining center, which is a machine designed precisely to handle large workpieces and heavy cutting. Adopting a double-column structure, it can easily machine workpieces weighing over 1 ton. It can complete the structural part machining of large machinery. If a 5-axis is needed, it only requires replacing a swivel head.
Features:
- Large workpiece machining
- Strong heavy cutting capability
- Large footprint
- Expensive price

Profile Machining Center(Single column)
A machine individually optimized specifically for profile machining, adopting a single-column structure and retaining a worktable that can extend longitudinally, with extremely high machining efficiency for long profiles, and is very suitable for polygonal tubular workpieces. Whether it is conventional T-profile or H-profile machining, it can handle it with absolute ease.
Features:
- Specialized machine for profile machining

Turning Center
Adding a Y-axis milling spindle on top of a basic CNC lathe can complete conventional turning machining and simultaneously complete a small part of milling. It is very suitable for complex workpieces centered on turning and supplemented by milling. With one fewer reloading process, it greatly improves machining efficiency.
Features:
- Integrated Turn-Mill
- Done-in-One

CNC Milling&Engraving Machine
All machining centers have the function of milling, but the CNC Milling&Engraving Machine stands out more for this function of “milling,” being able to achieve high-speed milling, small-tool milling, and high-precision milling, which is suitable for machining small workpieces. It is an indispensable machine for finishing operations. It is highly suitable for 3C electronic products.
Features:
- Entry-level machine for finishing operations
- Suitable for small precision parts
- Relatively low price

High-speed machining center
The high-speed machining center is an upgraded and enhanced version of the CNC milling&engraving machine, adding the capability of fine surface machining on the basis of high speed, high precision, and small tools. The directly machined workpieces can achieve a smooth surface without tool marks without doing any post-processing, and it is mainly used to machine micro workpieces that require ultra-high precision. In order to avoid vibration control issues brought by the ultra-high-speed spindle, good high-speed machines generally adopt an overhead traveling gantry structure, which is extremely stable at high speeds.
Features:
- An enhanced version of the CNC milling&engraving machine
- Micro precision parts machining
- Fast machining

Graphite Machining Center
The graphite machining center is a specialized machine developed specifically for graphite machining, with precision dustproof treatment applied to both the inside and outside of the machine body. For the characteristics of graphite materials, graphite machining centers often adopt high-speed spindles to perform fine machining on graphite under high-precision control.
Features:
- Optimized specifically for graphite machining
- High-level dustproofing
- High-speed spindle
